Were you as awestruck as I was?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Initially, I was part of the sceptics - we have a good venue in Aami Stadium, why move elsewhere? All that is changed now - top reason is of course, how much closer it is to home - we can leave a full hour later than we used to and get there with time to spare! Plus there are SO much more dining options in the city and on the way. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Which is how we ended up at the <a href="http://paleo-cafe.com.au/" target="_blank">Paleo Cafe</a> in Hyde Park one Sunday morning at peak Brunch time. It was insanely busy, but the service was still impeccable; we got seated and served quickly and had our food in no time at all - meaning we could eat quickly and head off to the city.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Everything on the menu is GF, so it wasn't a question of what we could have, but what we would have. Mum and I ended up getting the same item; Banana Coconut Pancakes with Lemon Curd, Berries and whipped cream. In the pancakes, the bananas replaced the flour, so they were quite dense, but with the smooth texture and flavour of the curd, it wasn't a bad thing. Considering we didn't have breakfast or lunch, it was good that these were filling.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Dad, however, went for the Full Breakfast with Egg, Bacon, Spinach and a Potato Rosti. I got to steal a bit of his Rosti and it was so good! It nice and crispy on the outside and so light and fluffy on the inside. Next time we go back, I'm definitely getting this - just for the Rosti ;)</div>

What good eateries have you found are good for pre-AFL games?</div>

</div>
When we headed down to McLaren Vale for a Girls Day Out, I was pretty insistent we visit <a href="http://theelbowroom.com.au/" target="_blank">The Elbow Room</a> for Lunch. The Head Chef and owner down there is Nigel Rich - formally of d'Arry's Verandah and other fantastic establishments around SA and overseas. Nigel's food philosophy is a good one and something that all South Australians should aspire to - fresh, local products, shown off to their natural perfection. I first came across Nigel's cooking when I met him at a last year's Cheesefest and then dined at the Elbow Room for Dad's birthday back in January.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As it turns out, our Girls Day Out couldn't have come at a better time, since a few weeks before we went, the team down at the Elbow Room had made the change from their Summer to their Autumn menu and it got me pretty excited to head back :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To start off with, the girls got a loaf of ER bread with Diana Kalamata olives and Olive oil. They raved about it and it looked pretty damn good, but I was content with having no bread and saving myself for Mains/Dessert. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Restaurant Manager Ben, however, had a different idea and bought out these little tasters to "excite our palates" and they did exactly that! These are Snapper Sashimi with Goats Curd and Squid Ink Crackers. Traditionally, I am not a fish and seafood fan and the thought of Sashimi usually scares me (just thinking of what could go wrong makes me shudder)! But I figured if the girls we game, then why not step out of my comfort zone…and I found myself pleasantly surprised when I liked it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For my main, it was a no brainer. I went for the Wood Smoked Lamb Brik with KI Dirt(y) Lentils, Labne and Smoked Eggplant. We very rarely have Lamb at home because I just don't really enjoy cooking it so it's a definite indulgence when we go out. Plus, I was pretty keen to try the Lentils from Simon Bryant's company, Dirt(y), which did not disappoint! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Kyla, however, decided to go with the Grass-Fed Black Angus Fillet with Truffled Butter and Smoked Proscuitto. She absolutely raved over it and said that it was cooked exactly how she had asked for it - Medium-Rare. And it showed how much she enjoyed it when she threatened to lick the plate clean ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp6Z9MdcL-GTnaQQxhYz4OdNg9THCwq1BAbADnvlyHj9BEKQI_wVx6OJaRhrsSf57BItrcqZ-zYVHrVqRespaQMxnzRHhL27m7N4_k2OstSWYNwHrat6t3vkx51CiJEakglJPkMCEJ3umR/s1600/DSC07363.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp6Z9MdcL-GTnaQQxhYz4OdNg9THCwq1BAbADnvlyHj9BEKQI_wVx6OJaRhrsSf57BItrcqZ-zYVHrVqRespaQMxnzRHhL27m7N4_k2OstSWYNwHrat6t3vkx51CiJEakglJPkMCEJ3umR/s1600/DSC07363.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And then dessert….I chose the Bitter Chocolate Parfait Sandwich with Candied Orange, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Persian Fairy Floss. This dish doesn't usually have the Fairy Floss on it, but because I couldn't have the chocolate biscuits to "sandwich" the Parfait, they put the floss on :) This was so rich and decadent and I was the perfect serving size - any bigger and it would've been too sickly. And I also came pretty closet to licking the plate so I didn't leave any of the Caramel behind ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWJiD8Lr1o2Jjo1rPCGP1gnJbTxmC9DQ5bIsCUX1Cj678Q7IMtx_mHzaV0hCM0O6tX4Ns6kNaLOc_N9-RlnLK6UCt4htcqNkASh0BzOXcoTueHXfpvOCj8jAmyWoZD_tPNcu1XotWf-Lm/s1600/DSC07366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWJiD8Lr1o2Jjo1rPCGP1gnJbTxmC9DQ5bIsCUX1Cj678Q7IMtx_mHzaV0hCM0O6tX4Ns6kNaLOc_N9-RlnLK6UCt4htcqNkASh0BzOXcoTueHXfpvOCj8jAmyWoZD_tPNcu1XotWf-Lm/s1600/DSC07366.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The girls, however, had this for dessert. This is the Knickerboker Glory. The Knickerboker Glory is another indulgent dessert and has many different components to it. It has creaminess from the Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramelised Yoghurt, crunchiness from the Honeycomb, a nice tart flavour from the Rhubarb, a wonderful refreshment from the Mandarin Sorbet, the always needed hit of Chocolate from the brownie and, like all good food items, topped off with some Chocolate Persian Fairy Floss. The girls just devoured these and could not stop raving about them - for the two of them, it was the highlight of the meal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlz0TdKGQ91DjI52MeiJgk7EGx0kT47DB7h48ZmQ5F7NwwbR5RsiWCvDuJqM8mIGHYRW85Q2TvOeUYShYmu8Oo30u6jdlsCY4hGk7OA9wxWP8e-ORIwkvMhG4UVLGpZSfNGHBbqaLWM5Kt/s1600/10291349_10152062995910770_6701301074415824125_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlz0TdKGQ91DjI52MeiJgk7EGx0kT47DB7h48ZmQ5F7NwwbR5RsiWCvDuJqM8mIGHYRW85Q2TvOeUYShYmu8Oo30u6jdlsCY4hGk7OA9wxWP8e-ORIwkvMhG4UVLGpZSfNGHBbqaLWM5Kt/s1600/10291349_10152062995910770_6701301074415824125_n.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For me, the highlight of the meal was the wine. Whilst there, we found out that not only is Nigel a top chef, he also enjoys trying his hand at winemaking. Partnering up with the guys over at Sellicks Hill Winery in 2010, Nigel produced a Grenache Shiraz, which is now being poured by the glass at the restaurant. This is a gorgeous, light red that made me consider begging them to let me buy a couple of bottles in addition to what we had with lunch and went quite well with everything we ate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In short, if you're ever heading to McLaren Vale at a meal time, make this place your number one stop. From the food, to the staff, to the view, everything is just superb and well worth the money and the time to drive down there. </div>

After almost 3 months of planning and swapping work, my sister Georgia, our friend Kyla and myself finally settled on a day that would suit all to go winery hopping/lunch down at McLaren Vale, South Australia. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We didn't have many expectations for the day - we just wanted to eat some good food, taste some good wine and have a relaxing day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We knew we wanted to go to <a href="http://theelbowroom.com.au/" target="_blank">The Elbow Room</a> for lunch and from there planned our day around there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_o4Dv_Pc-wlFHib1aWcMl77jjidbuJcCtVDfkIp6t7HSlzu53ghA5sSJa7wCA8b3NOjnaQ1N7tNvRigzGRBHPWpwzZWIXlaQ-E1lpjScf1nzAPRnIhlM3VOGJd-2hlWUjdTpSDagt0AcF/s1600/DSC07348.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_o4Dv_Pc-wlFHib1aWcMl77jjidbuJcCtVDfkIp6t7HSlzu53ghA5sSJa7wCA8b3NOjnaQ1N7tNvRigzGRBHPWpwzZWIXlaQ-E1lpjScf1nzAPRnIhlM3VOGJd-2hlWUjdTpSDagt0AcF/s1600/DSC07348.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'd heard wonderful things about <a href="http://www.coriole.com/" target="_blank">Coriole Vineyards</a> and the views from the top of their hill. I also knew of their olives and oils from working in a supermarket for a good number of years and was quite interested in tasting their wines.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Their reds were just divine! Their Dancing Fig was a fantastic example of Big, Bold flavours that McLaren Vale reds boast. I also really enjoyed their Sangiovese - it was a light red, one that would be able to be easily drunk on it's own, compared to the DF that I think would be better with a good hearty meal. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWP4F8MwdRDeZGg6fV3Z29zgXiPeYqGJde7sUbX4bswsQ6gCJVxRc5Ytt5kL5rwyHgqMj0Jl5J8XTyuHh4hwNOGxwoUAjOifgrW6_ME3VJWIfr6s3S7JiVyOgAEJqxHp2uUpPQUR151gOs/s1600/DSC07350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWP4F8MwdRDeZGg6fV3Z29zgXiPeYqGJde7sUbX4bswsQ6gCJVxRc5Ytt5kL5rwyHgqMj0Jl5J8XTyuHh4hwNOGxwoUAjOifgrW6_ME3VJWIfr6s3S7JiVyOgAEJqxHp2uUpPQUR151gOs/s1600/DSC07350.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We happened to get extremely lucky with the day we picked as well. The previous week or so and been cold, miserable and rainy and then the day we headed off, it was blue skies and sunshine! So we took some obligatory pictures on the lawn. Below is my sister Georgia and I…..I swear we didn't deliberately colour co-ordinate ;) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbYVjAsskh0w6Xp3eiolbe2SbosgswJi1vd7iNToq-X935z9pOfKzoqj0wiZfU4mh3VM2w-BOk-utMosNxdKgpFy7RSXew-vYTiU70OdzYnuatErepAdf-oI9HulFyFbt_dvX25OEOjje/s1600/DSC07353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlbYVjAsskh0w6Xp3eiolbe2SbosgswJi1vd7iNToq-X935z9pOfKzoqj0wiZfU4mh3VM2w-BOk-utMosNxdKgpFy7RSXew-vYTiU70OdzYnuatErepAdf-oI9HulFyFbt_dvX25OEOjje/s1600/DSC07353.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
After spending a good couple of hours at lunch, we were back on the road again. But not before popping next door to <a href="http://www.shingleback.com.au/" target="_blank">Shingleback</a> wines. We had heard they did a "Chocolate Wine" and decided to try it as it combined two great loves - chocolate and wine! It was a lovely drop and would be good as a dessert red. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Next stop was <a href="http://www.hitherandyon.com.au/" target="_blank">Hither & Yon</a>, located a Willunga. Kyla was the main one tasting there, as I was holding out for our next stop. However, she recommends heading there for a different take on some old classics. If we'd had more time, I would've loved to spend some more time wandering around Willunga, but we spent a tad too long at lunch to be able to do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Our last winery stop was <a href="http://wirrawirra.com/" target="_blank">Wirra Wirra</a> and the one I was most eagerly anticipating. I have been a fan of their blend, Churchblock for a good number of years now and if I see it on a menu, it was always be chosen over everything else. Yes, that is a giant Churchblock bottle made of corks located in the carpark below ;) Going into the tasting there, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try some of their other wines. Walking into the tasting room was like walking into someone's living room, with the added extra of that person having a long bar! The fire was lit and the staff were very welcoming as we stepped in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I started off with their Mrs Wrigley Moscato, which was a lovely and light red moscato - very easy to drink; could see myself easily drinking an entire bottle in a sitting at some stage! On that day, they were also tasting one of their additions to the McLaren Vale Scarce Earth program; the Tempranillo, which was just a gorgeous wine. But my favourite that I tasted was their Rare Tawny. I love myself a good Port and theirs was incredibly smooth was what I ended up purchasing from them, with the promise to myself to head back soon and get more others. </div>

Our last stop before heading home was the <a href="http://robernmenz.com.au/" target="_blank">Robern Menz</a> outlet shop. The girls were pretty keen to stop there to stop on chocolates and other wonderful treats ;) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A huge thank you must go to all of the people we encountered over our day out - you made it as wonderful as it was :) </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihMur87mf_JZNXzhLasVIiKRRI4yQzGEMuOxnrbVXIlxkFELdh_b5uXwfX-74Ej2nvPdNSNZ-qcioF8pzL0XP1vglztwgvytjX7FWSex4CcRysl1PeUQ4DNeWAzS37Cj-xtUeiitdsmcPQ/s1600/DSC07317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihMur87mf_JZNXzhLasVIiKRRI4yQzGEMuOxnrbVXIlxkFELdh_b5uXwfX-74Ej2nvPdNSNZ-qcioF8pzL0XP1vglztwgvytjX7FWSex4CcRysl1PeUQ4DNeWAzS37Cj-xtUeiitdsmcPQ/s1600/DSC07317.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
By the time it got to Thursday, all of the regional tents were open, so we had plenty of choices - it just came down to what could cater for us. A lot of them had a selection of local wineries sampling some of their more popular wines and then one or two fresh food choices. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My first choice would have been a burger from the Brassiere Stand from the Hilton and the mussels from the Eyre Peninsula. Unfortunately for me, the Burger wasn't Gluten Free and I chickened out on the mussels as I had never tried them and was scared to try -_- I'm terrible with trying new things...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq0V_bc6LqKa4EKVu7reMN-TFTJn6NxCUJTKYkKNe84_Z5WuOXH6h1KzJNpkSiGn8T2VUEY24LvF9gdRLn4yjtYBVpfrk2_rTiWLKAwQVRFsFGTRJWvty0F66PLyrvri2Shf9DsyHpOKTt/s1600/DSC07321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq0V_bc6LqKa4EKVu7reMN-TFTJn6NxCUJTKYkKNe84_Z5WuOXH6h1KzJNpkSiGn8T2VUEY24LvF9gdRLn4yjtYBVpfrk2_rTiWLKAwQVRFsFGTRJWvty0F66PLyrvri2Shf9DsyHpOKTt/s1600/DSC07321.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For Dinner and dessert we went to the Barossa, Be Consumed Tent to the Cafe Y area. For dinner, Mum decided to go for the Goat Curry, whilst I went for Wood Fried Barossa Pork Belly with a Garlic Mash, Shiraz Grenache Mouvedre Glaze and Caramelised Quince topped with Snow Pea Sprouts. The Pork was just amazing - it fell apart and made me want to go back for a second serving, had I not already decided what I wanted off of the dessert menu...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRKdcvQHwTzm66MDp0q4O8h2CJ0Dzw-FyalTtYWFSARdWwi8A_voHCbYQI5FiCStqSamyhHf2AmItr8sB7sDXmMUvbeYJVuKhzsKu3qVQImVtsYzOqSeF8ouKMC0Ml7feyUdHaH9CYT6__/s1600/DSC07335.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRKdcvQHwTzm66MDp0q4O8h2CJ0Dzw-FyalTtYWFSARdWwi8A_voHCbYQI5FiCStqSamyhHf2AmItr8sB7sDXmMUvbeYJVuKhzsKu3qVQImVtsYzOqSeF8ouKMC0Ml7feyUdHaH9CYT6__/s1600/DSC07335.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The Apple, Quince and Rhubarb Crumble with thick Jersey Cream was just what I needed after an evening of Gin tasting and the Pork and Goat dinners. Mum and I decided to share, which was a good choice in the end as del probably wouldn't have been able to finish one each! The crumble was just fantastic, and the best part was that it didn't taste Gluten Free - two big thumbs up from us! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAWd09Taht1UNcYwk87S81Ctr6rmC7SZwmTJ7pnpdmUhg4Pmy6AYWvTF4KmZzio6PM7S8GwfNgTb8lgJw5ojYe_tYiU2_ppfqMH0S7UW9JFxDPYjNzWF4_hZq2W1yWRBMeFLZy8gfLHWB/s1600/DSC07344.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAWd09Taht1UNcYwk87S81Ctr6rmC7SZwmTJ7pnpdmUhg4Pmy6AYWvTF4KmZzio6PM7S8GwfNgTb8lgJw5ojYe_tYiU2_ppfqMH0S7UW9JFxDPYjNzWF4_hZq2W1yWRBMeFLZy8gfLHWB/s1600/DSC07344.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All in all, it was a fantastic night out, which made me regret not being able to get in there for more events. Come 2016 for the next event, you won't be able to get me away! And after the huge success of this years event, after 2016 it will be an annual event :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Thanks must go to Jon and Sarah Lark and the team from KISpirits - next time I'm on KI, visiting you will be at the top of my to-do list! </div>

When the schedule for Tasting Australia was first released, one of the share sessions immediately stood out to me; Botanicals and Bootlegging - the art of Blending your own gin, run by the head of <a href="http://www.kispirits.com.au/" target="_blank">KISpirits</a>, Jon and Sarah Lark. I expressed interest one night at dinner and found that my mum would also be keen on heading along…next thing I know, tickets are booked, time flies and suddenly it's May and time for our Gin session. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We rocked up, were directed onto the stage and given all of our ingredients and utensils for the session. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaCnMakyOSY_0wnAncAbN5ZkuAyfIzlB99UzOVD8lNaQYZho4POFTw1T9JK1FPT2Hj1nkzhmYQMdPSltniELds-iE1vo5v77PsoC6jgUw2oO1n8MEWfTUFA7axxTEcHizGcGHVys0hEu7/s1600/DSC07326.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaCnMakyOSY_0wnAncAbN5ZkuAyfIzlB99UzOVD8lNaQYZho4POFTw1T9JK1FPT2Hj1nkzhmYQMdPSltniELds-iE1vo5v77PsoC6jgUw2oO1n8MEWfTUFA7axxTEcHizGcGHVys0hEu7/s1600/DSC07326.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
First part of the session was Jon Lark talking about Gin, his company, KISpirits and their history with Gin and just what he hoped we would get out of the session. Listening to him talk, it is clear to see how passionate he is about his spirits and that he hopes to change the stigma attached to Gin, in that people see it as "an older persons drink". The session itself proved this incorrect, as a majority of the class was under 30 years of age!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
KISpirits are known for being "traditional" in their Gin making. They blend a combination of Juniper, Coriander and Angelica Botanical Distillates to make a base Gin, then proceed to add different flavoured Botanicals to achieve the taste they want.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And then we went off to do just that...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Zdw95iZ-afLylQDvm0sIuDOmGE8IGLXjMGIuxfmgiDOR2BywW2g_8O1yTSB-3DDQdww6MA9Upk4YYYYZ3xfpi0ss1ks4Vp7m9tGsXJyIA1WsTNqXvrty_GZuumRZtXGwVd4mKLXxH-oV/s1600/DSC07323.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4Zdw95iZ-afLylQDvm0sIuDOmGE8IGLXjMGIuxfmgiDOR2BywW2g_8O1yTSB-3DDQdww6MA9Upk4YYYYZ3xfpi0ss1ks4Vp7m9tGsXJyIA1WsTNqXvrty_GZuumRZtXGwVd4mKLXxH-oV/s1600/DSC07323.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We got given 10 Botanicals to choose from; Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Cinnamon, Lemon, Cardamon, Aniseed, Orange, Ginger and Mint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr6vxD7T9p9a1zNa7aOpQUFYL9h6yyaX7_McEKhaA5fx9c7_Vdb9rP_JgtQ22eUB64iaowaXqxg-TacTJGRMFNXwLSVRtwTVYIw5wy-DptVOGlLOsUjgssbgY8fYRag8Ny5SHEvG5mnj2N/s1600/DSC07328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr6vxD7T9p9a1zNa7aOpQUFYL9h6yyaX7_McEKhaA5fx9c7_Vdb9rP_JgtQ22eUB64iaowaXqxg-TacTJGRMFNXwLSVRtwTVYIw5wy-DptVOGlLOsUjgssbgY8fYRag8Ny5SHEvG5mnj2N/s1600/DSC07328.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We were then told that Jon and Sarah had provided us with enough Juniper Distillates to form the base for 250mL of our own Gin blend; 200mL for a take home bottle and 50mL to drink on the spot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Jon recommended starting off with 70-75mLof Juniper as a base and then blending in our chosen botanicals and if we liked the taste of it after that, to then multiply that amount until we reached 250mL. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Looking back, I still don't know how I managed to make it all work and have it taste as good as it does….I'm terrible at Maths. Enough said. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8T32OHut7wcS0I3ZZ-REF0AA2GLplWf4VhGEnKQ7PzYjj3sd1N3xk2yy3-tQWUawqFeXi5AiEBjISl97ewi9vd0roSARyYfFZX_bETCITPM-HSmB9cTsRJT_de3wDI1NbQgXVKSHr-3cI/s1600/DSC07327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8T32OHut7wcS0I3ZZ-REF0AA2GLplWf4VhGEnKQ7PzYjj3sd1N3xk2yy3-tQWUawqFeXi5AiEBjISl97ewi9vd0roSARyYfFZX_bETCITPM-HSmB9cTsRJT_de3wDI1NbQgXVKSHr-3cI/s1600/DSC07327.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And voila! I have my very own blend of Juniper, Coriander, Cinnamon, Cardamon and Lemon Distillates :)</div>

I know it's been a while, but real life has been giving me lots of issues and has taken me away from the computer a bit :(<br />
<br />
But anyway, onto happier thoughts - after months of anticipation, Tasting Australia landed in Adelaide last week and I couldn't wait to throw myself head first in, starting with Fork On The Road on Sunday.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg31Rj1BtPlVNjaKPbxFmUq6CFsfIOZ4t-dKvMDkPg7kI4oDflHFABhHx9AzshvKAN5cgrw9tiDpuENxn_MoIvf20o_UK0Zn4i80nteSmu6saCcNRYNyvNzjkOk8L9i4RyJ-mYQLaYAj1Z6/s1600/DSC07307.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg31Rj1BtPlVNjaKPbxFmUq6CFsfIOZ4t-dKvMDkPg7kI4oDflHFABhHx9AzshvKAN5cgrw9tiDpuENxn_MoIvf20o_UK0Zn4i80nteSmu6saCcNRYNyvNzjkOk8L9i4RyJ-mYQLaYAj1Z6/s1600/DSC07307.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fork On The Road is a food truck festival that, this year alone, has also featured at the Adelaide Food and Wine Festival. This time however, there was a lot more choice, with the added bonus of having the Tasting Australia "Town Square" there as well. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4i5B44Vlcq5OWL-49HlkpYcW1DCzOSylGJQFtM0ajGK_JeAv6ywVsvRCsmKxfICt_Lyq5_fdbKXfJajcSpw4pH6n-VdwvFUpOwspPjZCXVkxgcl8E7PnH_eEXfrEacV0QSMNXamzqZJi3/s1600/DSC07309.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4i5B44Vlcq5OWL-49HlkpYcW1DCzOSylGJQFtM0ajGK_JeAv6ywVsvRCsmKxfICt_Lyq5_fdbKXfJajcSpw4pH6n-VdwvFUpOwspPjZCXVkxgcl8E7PnH_eEXfrEacV0QSMNXamzqZJi3/s1600/DSC07309.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, it was a pretty busy afternoon - and this was at 3pm! I decided to head into the Town Square to decide on what I wanted and fingers crossed the lines would be smaller once I had decided. As I wandered around Town Square, with the sounds of Poh talking on stage, I found myself slightly disappointed that many of the regional set ups wouldn't be opening until later on in the week. Luckily, at least the Barossa, Be Consumed tent was open and ready for business. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I started off with a glass of this gorgeous Alicante Bouchart from Hart of the Barossa winery. It was lovely and cold with some sweet flavours, just what I needed as I wandered around in the heat of the afternoon!</div>

After much wandering and deliberation, I decided on Mexican La Cantina Co. Authentic Mexican is naturally GF and the line up for these guys was insane, so I had peace of mind that they had a high turnover of food. The Quesadilla I chose was a Pulled Pork with Potato, Pineapple Salsa and Cheese :) If you every have the chance to go to a Fork on the Road and these guys are there, definitely check them out - you won't regret it!! </div>

So when I had to decide what cookies to make for the Cookie Swap it was easy to decide. I had seen an easy PB cookie recipe on numerous sites that had 3 ingredients - Sugar, Egg and PB. But upon doing my test run, I found they were a bit crumbly; which would not do well for shipping! I upped the PB amount a bit to help bind it and then added some choc chips in - because everything is better with Chocolate! I haven't heard anything from <a href="http://thelittlebluebicycle.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Mia</a>, <a href="http://fatisrecipes.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Fatima</a> or <a href="http://blog.erikarax.com/" target="_blank">Erika</a>...so fingers crossed they stayed in one piece!</div>

I should have been born Italian. There are times that I devour Pasta on a daily basis and wish that I had a Nonna to teach me how to make it fresh. So instead I try all the different brands of Pasta I can to find what I like the best. And when it comes to packet Gnocchi, I can't go past Simply Wize.</div>

<br />
So guys! I know it's been a while, but I got a new job! For those of you who know me well, you'll understand how amazing this is for me! For everyone else, I had become quite disenchanted with my previous job and the people who ran the place, so I had to get out. So yeah, a couple of crazy weeks of adapting and training, but I'm back :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I decided that I was going to take one more step out of my comfort zone and sign up for this year''s Food Blogger Cookie Swap. It was set up two years ago by Lindsay from <a href="http://www.loveandoliveoil.com/" target="_blank">Love and Olive Oil</a> and Julie from <a href="http://www.thelittlekitchen.net/" target="_blank">The Little Kitchen</a>. When you sign up, you donate a small amount that goes directly to <a href="http://www.cookiesforkidscancer.org/" target="_blank">Cookies for Kid's Cancer</a>. In my mind, that's good enough, but on top of that, you get the names/addresses of three other bloggers who have signed up from your country and three others get yours and you send a dozen cookies to each of them! Sign up closed the other day and I'm (im)patiently waiting for my Cookie matches to check out who I'll be sending mine to...<br />
<br />
Keep your eyes peeled, in about a month, the blogging world will be filled with everyones recipes and hopefully it might inspire some more of you to join in and help raise money for a good cause!Cassiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02732262407292396588noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-149073692467213286.post-27788020394292037342013-10-17T19:02:00.001-07:002013-10-17T19:02:29.997-07:00Melbourne Trip September 2013 Part 3 This is the last part of my 3 part series on Melbourne - Sunday :)<br />
<br />
We had debated all weekend over what to do today. The plan had always been to go to the St. Kilda markets, then head back to the CBD, get our bags and go to the airport. However, as it happens with all good plans, it changed; we heard on the city loop tram that there's a market on at Docklands every sunday, so we decided to head there instead.<br />
<br />
However, we walked out of the hotel on Sunday (after going to bed with it raining) to see bright blue skies. So we scrapped the new plan and went to St. Kilda. Lucky we did, since we were greeted with this view....<br />

For Breakfast, I went out of my comfort zone. I usually like to stick with just Pancakes or Bacon and Toast, since I'm not a huuuuge egg fan. Like seriously, it's scrambled or not at all. But I decided to take a chance on an omelet....</div>

....and boy was I rewarded for my bravery; it was superb! It was light, fluffy and full of flavour. The bread was also pretty good - however, I suspect that was due to the amount of butter I applied to it - I haven't found a restaurant that does overly good bread, but I love that they do it anyway. The cafe staff were incredibly helpful and a special mention must go to our main waiter, who was very nice and had a wonderful Irish accent ;)</div>

<br />
Saturday was a big whirlwind of busyness! The main portion was, of course, The Coeliac Society of Victoria and Tasmania's Gluten Free Expo for this year. It was held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre and was well-attended by exhibitors and visitors alike.<br />
<br />
So we started the day with a strong cup of coffee before heading to the Exhibition Centre. I've always enjoyed going there - it's right on the Yarra River and just has gorgeous surroundings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We got really lucky - after last years expo, we filled in a survey to improve it and then about a week before this weeks expo (around the time the tickets went on sale), we got an email informing us that as a thank you for filling out the survey, we got a couple of complimentary tickets for this years! Epic Win :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0mMyWSTzxNXctK-ZTX0ZhseNkH2xYlTQInUMLOogOIRxm5uigx_64HDp1qi2PZ6GT8oToPHIS7SYyYVsEy0lk3f_ohyphenhyphenfzg5n-9sNcnPAOBFaOlz7MYEf7Yt3h9doaYegolxKdC4Ee3NuP/s1600/IMG_0370.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0mMyWSTzxNXctK-ZTX0ZhseNkH2xYlTQInUMLOogOIRxm5uigx_64HDp1qi2PZ6GT8oToPHIS7SYyYVsEy0lk3f_ohyphenhyphenfzg5n-9sNcnPAOBFaOlz7MYEf7Yt3h9doaYegolxKdC4Ee3NuP/s320/IMG_0370.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The crowds were pretty insane right from the moment the doors opened. The aisles were pretty packed with people and the crowds at each stall were crazy, but there's something about being there (regardless of the busyness) and knowing that they're all there for the same reason as you (plus a majority - if not all - are Australian Brands!). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC4QcV2bPNbFBB_nMtQBzTvh4EzC_2fjzY-NJAMZDNY6AbODdxH1bazyupmmnQiCsvEFICqV72ksxmryDBI2_aRA4ozmgI4XGkfkE2VZmMmXCEXO5SL4f782ck5apKOcOp5hCZvkVxQzfc/s1600/IMG_0338.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC4QcV2bPNbFBB_nMtQBzTvh4EzC_2fjzY-NJAMZDNY6AbODdxH1bazyupmmnQiCsvEFICqV72ksxmryDBI2_aRA4ozmgI4XGkfkE2VZmMmXCEXO5SL4f782ck5apKOcOp5hCZvkVxQzfc/s320/IMG_0338.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For me, the natural first place to go is to Naturally Gluten Free, who were stocking HOT JAM DONUTS!!! Zomg, so amazing - just like the "normal" ones from years ago haha however, nobody else shared this sentiment, so I left them to be boring and went and got my donut :D</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then made our way around and experienced some new products, but (in my honest opinion) more importantly caught up with some old friends. Like "Uncle Rick". He is Rick from <a href="http://www.rickgrant.com.au/" target="_blank">Rick Grant's Seasoning Mixes</a>. We adore his Wedges mix, and if it were easy to get it here in SA, we'd eat wedges a lot more! However, this time around, I got his cakes and dessert cookbook :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up was <a href="http://www.brookfarm.com.au/products/muesli/gluten-free-macadamia-muesli/p/54" target="_blank">Brookfarm</a>. I have eaten their Muesli for a while - my local Foodland stocks it all the time. Then last year before winter, they released a Porrij (Porridge haha) and I devoured that all through winter. This year at the expo, they had all new trail mixes which were pretty damn good!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have had a long standing friendship with Melinda. I first met her 4 years ago at my first expo and she was lovely! Over the years, I've caught up with her numerous times when she's come here to promote new products. We've gotten so close, that if it's quiet, she'll wander the store with me while I do my shopping! Then last year, I actually won a competition through her company and won an iPad! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Melinda's is also a 100% Australian Owned company. In fact, I'm fairly sure that is her Dad helping her out above and below, as I've seen him at other events as well :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A special mention must go out to Annabel from the <a href="http://www.bikkiedough.com.au/" target="_blank">Bikkie Dough Co</a>. I briefly met her last year, but as we were driving back home, we couldn't find a safe way of getting her frozen Bikkie Dough back home. But having flown across this year, we contacted her again to get her thoughts. She said that as long as they were kept below fridge temperature, we would be able to re-freeze them. So we took Ice Packs and freezer bags across with us and got her to keep some aside for us to pick up at the end. We got incredibly lucky with Annabel as she is so lovely and was so helpful over the entire process of pre-ordering everything. Plus, we got super excited about her releasing biscuit mixes at the show as well!</div>

We also got pretty lucky with our hotel - they put all of our frozen goods with the freezer bags in their kitchen's freezer until we were ready to head off to the airport! What good service!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After all the excitement of the expo, we left at around 2ish and headed back to the hotel to dump our bags and have a pick-me-up coffee. BTW: Holiday Inn on Flinders St's cafe do a wonderful coffee!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then headed off down along the Yarra and headed back to the DFO to get a few things we didn't get yesterday. We then headed towards Albert Park to get to a wool shop Mum had heard about on Facebook called Wool Baar. </div>

That night for dinner, we had decided to wander down South Wharf and see if anything caught our eye that we could eat at, and if not, we'd head back to Il Primo Posto. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, upon wandering along South Wharf, we didn't actually find anything that mentioned anything about Gluten Free...so we just went back to <a href="http://www.ilprimoposto.com.au/" target="_blank">Il Primo Posto</a>. We even had the same waitress, who - to her credit - remembered us and our dietary requirements! But this time, I decided on what was my second choice the night before and what I wish I had actually got the night before - Spaghetti Bolognaise!! Side story, my sister is not a big fan of noodles, so it is very rare to have this at home, so I was very happy I chose to get it :) :)</div>

Over the weekend of the 13th-15th of September, my Mum, Aunty Michelle, her friend Sue and myself headed over to Melbourne for the annual Gluten Free Expo for 2013. We spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Melbourne having a girls weekend by eating, shopping and a lot more eating! This first post is all based on what we did on the Friday :)<br />
<br />
Travelling Tip #1: Be Smart when choosing your flight times.<br />
<br />
Clearly, since I'm including this tip, we did NOT do this...when we booked, we decided to go with the first flight of the day out of Adelaide for 2 reasons. 1. It was one of the cheapest of the day (gee, I wonder why...) and 2. It arrived in Melbourne at 7:30, so that gave us more time to shop! But we didn't exactly factor in when we'd have to be at the airport by and consequently, what time we'd have to get up. We had to leave home at around 4:30am :S However, if you don't mind getting up at the crack of dawn to get a plane, then spend all day on your feet - go ahead and book whatever time you want....not my thing though! I started to look forward to my coffees desperately though...thinking back to all the times I've been at the airport in the mornings, I don't think I've ever been there when it's been dark...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSsAPgov6hBBAGWVhYiuDu3RmT5iUKITJzH54Jyqu6Nhd2OOJ8Ih58FODITKgCmXxkgtX6iiEyAywlaVdbOTnrbndbX7Z8rBE4fsEonWwwzNLztoLrdQJtQfAQeAGFTJiZL_ZAr0ZbZ1-3/s1600/IMG_0341.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSsAPgov6hBBAGWVhYiuDu3RmT5iUKITJzH54Jyqu6Nhd2OOJ8Ih58FODITKgCmXxkgtX6iiEyAywlaVdbOTnrbndbX7Z8rBE4fsEonWwwzNLztoLrdQJtQfAQeAGFTJiZL_ZAr0ZbZ1-3/s320/IMG_0341.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A few days before we left, we rang Qantas to confirm our gluten free meals; they informed us we'd have one on the way there (breakfast) but on the way home, it'd be afternoon tea, so they wouldn't have anything. We were kind apprehensive about breakfast, but took a plunge and didn't eat at home before leaving - lucky too, since a GF breakfast on Qantas is actually pretty good.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg97EiMLEi3Js4otow22GXic8r0ljrYMXbO6orC76NknwNU27zkl_LT4Nd9CvCyW4LKwkq9RvOtFYQZHdIdTDlIg1Ph6HNz0nILcbmVd1POKsKKo_LA97y0nfBa3sShTjrXyjxl_T9DBYii/s1600/IMG_0347.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg97EiMLEi3Js4otow22GXic8r0ljrYMXbO6orC76NknwNU27zkl_LT4Nd9CvCyW4LKwkq9RvOtFYQZHdIdTDlIg1Ph6HNz0nILcbmVd1POKsKKo_LA97y0nfBa3sShTjrXyjxl_T9DBYii/s320/IMG_0347.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Travelling Tip #2: If you get the choice, always go for a cold cereal meal over a hot one.<br />
<br />
Whilst I don't exactly get the choice anymore, I found it was always safe to go with cereal - even airlines can't get that one wrong. They can, however, get hot meals wrong - think soggy eggs, tough sausages and you get the picture! And this time around, mine even came with a Cookie/Biscuit from Rowie's that I had never seen before!!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Travelling Tip #3: If you're only travelling with one suitcase and going to the CBD, go via the Skybus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously, this only applies for Melbourne; other capital cities may have one similar to this, but I don't know anything about them. We bought our tickets online a couple of days before, since it's cheaper that way. It cost us $17 to go into the CBD, but would've been cheaper if we had booked both ways. Plus, it only took about 25mins and we got a pretty specky view of the city as we came in towards Southern Cross Station.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From Southern Cross Station, we wandered down Spencer St. to our choice in hotel - <a href="http://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/us/en/melbourne/melsf/hoteldetail?qCiD=27&qCiMy=082013&qCoD=28&qCoMy=082013&qDest=Melbourne+Australia&qHtlC=melsf&qAdlt=1&qChld=0&qRms=1&qPSt=0&qRtP=6CBARC&qSmP=3&qRmP=3&qWch=0&qSHp=1&qBrs=hi.ex.rs.cv.ic.cp.in.sb.cw.6c&qSrt=BRAND_SORT&qRad=50&qRdU=0&qRpp=25&qRRSrt=rt&qLat=-37.8176&qLng=144.9671&srb_u=1" target="_blank">The Holiday Inn</a>, about 5mins away from the station. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We chose the Holiday Inn for a couple of reasons; it was a short walk to and from Southern Cross Station (due to the sky bus)and it was only about a 5min walk to the Exhibition Centre. This narrowed it down to two and the final decision was based on the Holiday Inn having free wifi :P</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had such a quick check-in, mainly because we didn't mind about adjoining rooms, had time to freshen up and head out to shop! We hit up DFO first and got there as the shops were beginning to open. One of my favourite clothing buys over the weekend was from <a href="http://www.dfo.com.au/Essendon/Stores/Ginger-Tree/" target="_blank">Ginger Tree</a> there. Three of us happened to buy the same dress in different colours....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After doing some shopping, we stopped for "lunch". Lunch for most of us consisted of coffee and a Macadamia Toffee Cheesecake - my kind of lunch!! We actually found a cafe in the food court called Piccolo that did a wide range of GF goodies.</div>

After finishing our shopping there, we decided to head to Harbourtown. In order to get there from the CBD, we hopped on the <a href="http://ptv.vic.gov.au/route/view/1112" target="_blank">City Circle Free Tram</a>. This comes roughly every 10-15mins and is Free for the entire loop of the city, which was really handy! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Getting there, we slightly disappointed with what we found; it was pretty quiet (presumably because it was a Friday afternoon), but there were a lot of shops that were not even open. If I were to go again, it would probably be on a weekend. But I did find this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4TwPQhRSlL1tFa4L3LMKasTK4vio9id8NqoBLpXTZapqPYWs0Aw2PGrTZGIrxWGPGfTAiZ5Tn0lVIdoGqo54OmNCEbAedk3DdVrWCIzMJNADuJ8YB-e9p26Csl8I3iNYxyw3kJ1eAVkyD/s1600/IMG_0327.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4TwPQhRSlL1tFa4L3LMKasTK4vio9id8NqoBLpXTZapqPYWs0Aw2PGrTZGIrxWGPGfTAiZ5Tn0lVIdoGqo54OmNCEbAedk3DdVrWCIzMJNADuJ8YB-e9p26Csl8I3iNYxyw3kJ1eAVkyD/s320/IMG_0327.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also had a very much needed coffee whilst at Harbourtown. We just went to Gloria Jeans - nothing fancy, but they had <a href="http://www.cookie.com.au/shopping/gluten-free/4/1" target="_blank">Byron Bay Cookies</a> there! The triple choc is just to die for!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After declaring the Harbourtown was a bust, we headed back to the hotel to just chill. Once dusk hit, we took a wander up to Bourke St Mall, but nothing really caught our eye, so we went back down to South Wharf for a look and dinner. </div>

As my friends and family will know, I have a love-hate relationship with Melbourne. I don't see why people go crazy over it and I really dislike Fed Square (don't ask - there's no logic behind that one), but this time around, the shopping was actually good and I saw Fed square for the first time at night, which was a little specky...I guess somethings can change....</div>

Walking along South Wharf, makes me very excited for the continuing development of Adelaide Oval. It's going to be wonderful to park on the outskirts of the CBD, have a nice diner somewhere in the city (personally I think <a href="http://www.goodlifepizza.com/" target="_blank">Good Life</a> is going to be a real hit for us), then wander on down to the Oval along the Torrens. </div>

Pretty sure this was one of the BEST gf meals I've had out...ever!! It was at Il Primo Posto along South Wharf. Everything about it was wonderful - the food, the staff, the service, the location! We got seated as soon as we got there and were ordering drinks and receiving them not long after. Our food choices were easy - we don't spaghetti here often, so I went for Pumpkin, Danish Fetta, Broccoli and Chilli Spaghetti. The others all got pasta related dishes as well. The meals came out incredibly fast - 10 mins top! Note: if you don't like Chilli, ask for it without - there is A LOT! Lucky for me, I loved it :) The Staff were so helpful and really really nice as well. Go check it out - the only thing is, that they don't take reservations after 6:30, but we didn't have any issues getting served on Friday and the same happened when we went back on Saturday (but that's a whole-nother story....)</div>

After about 5 years of running them (in early 2009), she sold off the rights and running of them to an outside company, but still did guest speaking roles at them.<br />
<br />
Then in early 2012, that company decided to combine the Expo with the ever popular "Good Food and Wine Show". Whilst they obviously thought it would be a good idea, the exhibitors didn't agree due to the high prices and most of the people not going for the Gluten Free side of things, so they had trouble finding exhibitors to go.<br />
<br />
So the <a href="http://victas.coeliac.org.au/" target="_blank">Coeliac Society of Victoria and Tasmania</a> decided to run their own. They held a one day Expo at Caulfield Racecourse in September 2012. Due to it being run by CSVT and being an unknown of how popular it would be, the exhibitors were slightly scant with how much products they took.<br />
<br />
Then this year, due to the success of last year, the CSofVT decided to host it over 2 days in September at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre again.<br />
<br />
I went in 2009 and flew in Friday morning, spent Friday in Melbourne shopping, Saturday at the Expo and flew back out on Saturday night.<br />
<br />
I then went with Mum last year. We decided that so we could buy up big, we would drive over from Adelaide. So we left on Thursday afternoon, stopped in Horsham over night and arrived in Melbourne on Friday afternoon, after stopping in Bendigo in the morning. Went to the taping of the 7pm Project (Channel 10) in the evening on Friday, Expo on Saturday, then spent all day Sunday driving home.<br />
<br />
I have so many wonderful memories from expos of the past and cannot wait to go this year and see all of the friends I've made and meet new ones!Cassiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02732262407292396588noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-149073692467213286.post-4986362318388310732013-09-10T06:43:00.002-07:002013-09-10T06:43:52.743-07:00Mum's Special Chocolate Mud Cake<br />
Last week, we celebrated my Mum's "getting-closer-to-a-signific" Birthday. She often doesn't like a big fuss made - usually she gets unlucky and has to work on her birthday and this year was no different. So I decided to do something a little special for her...a Chocolate Mud Cake.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP93GQ2Pplfv-VxdV_OR-YLWj3xgycmKPeJr3oGXLDbJsQeqPO2LFPiGPHdKlhEXbRfTsOLVcGJvkZaDr4jy0uDjSwztqqzeiolHDrMRAzbmsrH2U1Tes-iECH1C5BI5kNOqBOa3IabrDe/s1600/IMG_0256.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP93GQ2Pplfv-VxdV_OR-YLWj3xgycmKPeJr3oGXLDbJsQeqPO2LFPiGPHdKlhEXbRfTsOLVcGJvkZaDr4jy0uDjSwztqqzeiolHDrMRAzbmsrH2U1Tes-iECH1C5BI5kNOqBOa3IabrDe/s320/IMG_0256.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Since she was diagnosed a Coeliac 6 years ago, I'm 99% sure she hasn't had a Gluten Free Mud Cake. So it was an easy decision on what to make, the hard part was the "How". Lucky for me, the answer was sitting in my pantry - in the form of White Wings Gluten Free Flour. I've wanted to play around with it and so I went on their website to check out their website to see what recipes they had on offer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhw_Nx5wfz6bc954VbX1eEon6nUMr56fKuZrs8NKDpd4PhLgpzUWM1z1nIQjstUloKvVOLLjSfByR8DkVRP42u_gYKnyAihqI5mjBdoc6Te5xdQqZLFoRP-C2ws2yhFyLbb5qbFTAxJbfQ/s1600/IMG_0264.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhw_Nx5wfz6bc954VbX1eEon6nUMr56fKuZrs8NKDpd4PhLgpzUWM1z1nIQjstUloKvVOLLjSfByR8DkVRP42u_gYKnyAihqI5mjBdoc6Te5xdQqZLFoRP-C2ws2yhFyLbb5qbFTAxJbfQ/s320/IMG_0264.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily for me, they had a Chocolate Mud Cake on there! I adjusted it slightly to suit what we like as a family, and I must say it turned out well - despite Mum not wanting candles or us to sing "Happy Birthday" :(<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi42xlesA8YrO5i9KQl8bThIrG713D8eHVywXgm9orD2RIz_ZHVnGruroUiKxm_Cz_z7F9spq5Auwqalj4VQJHpr9K-euJl8XU-KjBVXbaMBD2rqKEZIbXTGdew9j59r7KOQ-zAmHS1a0Xu/s1600/IMG_0270.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi42xlesA8YrO5i9KQl8bThIrG713D8eHVywXgm9orD2RIz_ZHVnGruroUiKxm_Cz_z7F9spq5Auwqalj4VQJHpr9K-euJl8XU-KjBVXbaMBD2rqKEZIbXTGdew9j59r7KOQ-zAmHS1a0Xu/s320/IMG_0270.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Something I feel I should mention before we get onto the cake - I am a big fan of supporting your local produce (especially with living in Australia and having so much imported produce on the shelves), so from now on, if I do use an Australia produced product, I will say so, that way you Aussie's out there can do so as well!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Next, lick the bowl clean. This is a very important step - maybe one of the most important.</div>

<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Allow the cake to cool in the tin completely.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. To make the Icing, place the Chocolate, Cream and Butter in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. Stir until melted and smooth.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. Spread evenly over the top and sides of the cake. FYI: if you spread over the sides, it helps keep the cake moist! </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsfacpehc3AqIm1ovX3EBeVOz9NktMZS1Gy0ZOHCIdABhfV2t5GzZFowmAnqm25r16teO0Iselo9kuAqCn1FkyzU1YTipcmfIdvf8pbRZ1X63L0l0HxMocSbGMx_5GSOzx4ucsKga5wdT/s1600/IMG_0126.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsfacpehc3AqIm1ovX3EBeVOz9NktMZS1Gy0ZOHCIdABhfV2t5GzZFowmAnqm25r16teO0Iselo9kuAqCn1FkyzU1YTipcmfIdvf8pbRZ1X63L0l0HxMocSbGMx_5GSOzx4ucsKga5wdT/s320/IMG_0126.jpeg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now for the best part - Dessert (aka. Part 3)....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Peanut Crumble, Peanut Butter Custard with Grilled Bananas :) :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is just a combination of all my favourite things - Peanuts, Peanut Butter and Bananas. When I read this was dessert, I almost fainted...ok, so I didn't, but my taste buds did :P</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSobAizeHapJeAlgNM-P6z5dhIH5JL9jczVvJ3QC8t6DJ8eiZQutlGrzWXSeg-xreJX5ls9RJ_k91oDCjz2AdS69AmrRHNaqsx0kZs745JUxGFTIvmP0NYy6ifhT0kPeGZ13jWQ1NPgvV/s1600/IMG_0132.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSobAizeHapJeAlgNM-P6z5dhIH5JL9jczVvJ3QC8t6DJ8eiZQutlGrzWXSeg-xreJX5ls9RJ_k91oDCjz2AdS69AmrRHNaqsx0kZs745JUxGFTIvmP0NYy6ifhT0kPeGZ13jWQ1NPgvV/s320/IMG_0132.jpeg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And as you can see that I enjoyed it incredibly - this was one step away from licking it clean...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So the crumble section was basically peanuts blitzed in a food processor with some sugar to a fine crumble.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Epcn8AHtgwnj9NYVXDhY9vo8FC7RbhyCK_GsHnd6RPG3GYj1xWi5lox3iyU76vM3pP9K7lN7EvT-OX6tRaDbbRDl-umagQWux6ncWeE6VfACHfljGWJMPepUAfnIUsHvhCIiA-A2SH9p/s1600/IMG_0190.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Epcn8AHtgwnj9NYVXDhY9vo8FC7RbhyCK_GsHnd6RPG3GYj1xWi5lox3iyU76vM3pP9K7lN7EvT-OX6tRaDbbRDl-umagQWux6ncWeE6VfACHfljGWJMPepUAfnIUsHvhCIiA-A2SH9p/s320/IMG_0190.jpeg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before this night, I had never made custard from scratch (I know, I know, such a blasphemy!), but I've grown up in a house where packet custard is the best thing since sliced bread and that from-scratch-custard is the hardest thing in the world...BUT this was so incredibly easy that I've made it numerous times since!!! And it's so easy to get the Peanut Butter flavour - you just mix in your favourite Peanut Butter spread at the very end :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFgs-Z44R4mUAt7AkDIaKRcIISiaH_oniRnMDQTzkMBdKBs8f9k_w_h2XjbNBx9mnT1T3RDtL88GxABDLjWukdlpXOVDX0YL6jpm8obQq9HKTDwQY8bIKhff4meaYmJfv49kBBhB7Habq5/s1600/IMG_0131.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFgs-Z44R4mUAt7AkDIaKRcIISiaH_oniRnMDQTzkMBdKBs8f9k_w_h2XjbNBx9mnT1T3RDtL88GxABDLjWukdlpXOVDX0YL6jpm8obQq9HKTDwQY8bIKhff4meaYmJfv49kBBhB7Habq5/s320/IMG_0131.jpeg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we just pan fried some sliced banana to get a "grilled" effect for it...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Are you hungry yet?? Be Brave and do something you haven't done before, like me with the custard!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<br />
So here is Part 2 of my Sprout Cooking adventure! This time, the main meal :) But before we could cook and eat it, we had a discussion on restaurants around the Adelaide area that are allergy friendly...some of which I'll be visiting soon to give you an opinion on :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A fact that is very well known around my family and friends is that I am not a seafood person. In fact, that is a gross understatement - a previous partner would never eat any since I wouldn't go anywhere near him afterwards! However, there are two exceptions to this rule (and don't ask me the logic behind, because I don't know!) - Salmon and Scallops. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Salmon is due to being able to cook it to get a crispy skin (as shown above) and Scallops are because I had the most amazing Scallops in Seattle - they were topped with crispy Bacon and BBQ Sauce ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So when Callum and Themis announced the main course, I was surprisingly excited...This Salmon was crumbed in uncooked Quinoa with some herbs and spices, fried off in a pan to seal all the flavours then popped into the oven to cook properly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Check out the Quinoa!! It went so crispy and crunchy and the Salmon cooked perfectly and just fell away as we were eating it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then served it with a Pumpkin, Brussel Sprout and Pinenut Salad which had a Honey Balsamic dressing - just perfection!</div>

<br />
<br />
Here in Adelaide, there's a cooking course called <a href="http://www.sproutcooking.com.au/" target="_blank">Sprout Cooking</a>. It is run by <a href="http://callumhann.com.au/" target="_blank">Callum Hann</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/ThemisAPD" target="_blank">Themis Chryssidis</a>. Themis is a local Adelaide dietician who is happy to help replace the bad food in your life with slightly better food, just by using different ingredients. Callum is a bit of a local celebrity here; he starred and came runner-up in Season 2 of Masterchef Australia, then went on to win Masterchef All-Stars last year.<br />
<br />
Their class, Sprout, is all about making healthy food easy and affordable and within that, they run numerous different types of classes. I went to a Gluten Free one with my mum in February, then when the chance came to go to another one a couple of weeks ago came up, we jumped. It was a lot of fun. For $90ish, you learn to cook a 3 course meal, get 3 glasses of wine (if you so desire all three) and guidance from Callum and Themis. The beauty is that every season, they change the recipes to adapt them to what is fresh and available.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic-2yfGo2v1UDTQzCPQV7bqHSyvU8biLcMic5I22q3SSCuNrwLhMXdssBTheAKxuWLubOGBTb5hQeLuGsoDUEqq3syOuprKZH1ntktNLHqTPcPRlW7oRb-trhnVhxZtWwAwI8IiJUEeVrN/s1600/IMG_0175.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic-2yfGo2v1UDTQzCPQV7bqHSyvU8biLcMic5I22q3SSCuNrwLhMXdssBTheAKxuWLubOGBTb5hQeLuGsoDUEqq3syOuprKZH1ntktNLHqTPcPRlW7oRb-trhnVhxZtWwAwI8IiJUEeVrN/s320/IMG_0175.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Entree was Ricotta and Spinach Cannelloni. As you can see, the filling was Ricotta, wilted Spinach and Parmesan. In order to make it more healthy, cheaper and Gluten Free, we used thinly sliced and grilled Eggplant as the Cannelloni and rolled it around the filling.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg9ThrWGWmhpmf2hd-c3jfpOjntkO1p9PK9RgVsS8-507o85oQ-5J7E4VnaI7NxIcMgG7fY2ihUT2C-8vKwWNezN9WqK1eMRdBpCDxrT3_rxz7l1Nyz0wXk8oSif7vaY_TJQnBj95XcqZ8/s1600/IMG_0118.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg9ThrWGWmhpmf2hd-c3jfpOjntkO1p9PK9RgVsS8-507o85oQ-5J7E4VnaI7NxIcMgG7fY2ihUT2C-8vKwWNezN9WqK1eMRdBpCDxrT3_rxz7l1Nyz0wXk8oSif7vaY_TJQnBj95XcqZ8/s320/IMG_0118.jpeg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The sauce was a basic tomato Passata with with sliced Chilli, Garlic and spinach stems. When I make this I will put in no where near as much chilli - these still had the seeds in them! Talk about a bit of heat!!! Haha but it went well with the coolness of the fillings :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Part 2 and Main Course coming up soon...</div>

That means that whenever I find a good looking flourless recipe, I'm eager to try it. Enter these Chocolate Chip Cookies...<br />

These are just amazing and chewy and wonderful! They taste a lot like a chocolatey chip meringue...slightly crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside. They were incredibly simple to make and made so many - if I made them smaller, I could definitely have made more. </div>

I'd been on the diet for just over 2 months and during that time, I'd been planning my 21st. I had decided to do something with my friends and something with my family/family friends. I had done the whole party piss up and get blindly drunk for my 18th, so this time around, I wanted to remember it all.<br />
<br />
I ended up settling taking 20ish friends out to do Laser Skirmish. At that stage, I was heavily in love with How I Met Your Mother (still am, but more so then...), so that swayed my decision slightly haha<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf7wOW5_QyzknVYtUhy3Z3qh4m8uusmHI8-liWxAZcgOUL10fNfKiaW9Aery_64uaAR9RuNq_bswFLzU5TU88GemHBRmglM2bQYWQWqVo5LYn6tzkqu20IW85bIQp3yv0xlcksVNxQpGU8/s1600/DSC03101.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf7wOW5_QyzknVYtUhy3Z3qh4m8uusmHI8-liWxAZcgOUL10fNfKiaW9Aery_64uaAR9RuNq_bswFLzU5TU88GemHBRmglM2bQYWQWqVo5LYn6tzkqu20IW85bIQp3yv0xlcksVNxQpGU8/s320/DSC03101.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All of us afterwards.<br />
<br />
It was a truly wonderful night and I'm so so happy I went down that route :) Anyone looking for a different sort of celebration for any birthday - consider it, you won't regret it!<br />
<br />
The following day, I had my celebration with family and family friends. I hummed and ahhhhed about this for a while and what to do...in the end, I decided to go out somewhere for a high tea. I decided to go to the Stamford Plaza in the Adelaide CBD. It was more worthwhile (money-wise) some of the other hotels I looked at and was more central than Glenelg. I ended up choosing the <a href="http://www.stamford.com.au/spa/adelaide-restaurant-bars/adelaide-high-tea" target="_blank">Indulgent High Tea</a>. It was fantastic!! We got a glass of champagne upon arrival and had too much food to know what to do with haha. The were incredibly helpful with everything gluten free...they were able to do food for me and my coeliac mum and allowed us to bring our own cake (more on that later though).<br />

This was what I got - Vanilla Panacotta, some finger sandwiches (bread wasn't amazing, but I give them points for trying), lemon curd muffin, vanilla ice cream and chocolate wafer stick. Overall it was amazing and the staff we incredibly helpful. Mind you, when everyone else is getting this....<br />

There is a certain amount of jealousy you feel :( But, everyone enjoyed it and had fun, so that's what really mattered!</div>

The cake, however, was the biggest highlight (apart from having everyone I love in the same place) for me. We went with a local South Australian company, Heidelberg Cakes. We'd heard good things about them, plus the owner's daughter is Gluten Free, so they were very careful with making Gluten Free cakes, so much so that they have an entirely different bakery for them. They're also very welcome to changes. So I wanted this <a href="http://www.heidelbergcakes.com.au/d541/girls-cake-18th-and-21st-21" target="_blank">cake</a>, but I wanted it round, so they did that. They have numerous gf cake flavours and I went with the <a href="http://www.heidelbergcakes.com.au/l124/baci" target="_blank">Baci flavour</a>. This is what the end result looked like....</div>

<div>
Ah, so I can't believe I have just said that, but this is the Aussie Kitchen, so I do have so keep up with appearances ;P </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've been contemplating starting this up for a while, but have only really just found the time to sit down and get it done. This will be a lot like a chronicle of my life; I remember a lot of my life experiences by food, photos or who I spend them with.<br />
<br />
I have always enjoyed photography and cooking, I've just never combined the two before, so bear with me if they're not good to start with!<br />
<br />
I'm a sweet-tooth at heart who is trying to be healthier (my PT will attest to that), but expect more sweet than savoury dishes - I can't change who I am fundamentally haha<br />
<br />
Until next time<br />
Cassie xx<br />
